TOURISM MINISTRY TO CAPITALIZE ON OBAMA’S VISIT

Such was the headline on a story in the July 6, 2009 DAILY GRAPHIC (Page 47) and such was the  Ghanaian agenda from day 1 when negotiations began between US and Ghanaian officials for a prospective visit of Barack Obama.

Nice to see Ghana win one for a change. even though the agenda is misguided, shortsighted  and elitist.

Mention is made of the visit  and its aftermath “producing huge dividends for the country’s  tourism”. Really!?!?  In the midst of an economic recession with prospects of a recovery fading with each  publication of new data, Ghana expects  the Obama visit to be a windfall! Ha!

Right now, we at Four Villages Inn hear about the  lines in front of the  Foreign Nationals immigration counters composed of Ghanaians holding foreign passports. . Many  are coming back  out of necessity caused by hardships brought on by the recession in the west! They are coming back to see what opportunities there are awaiting them in order to perhaps make a homecoming. I hope they are not swayed by all the hype surrounding tourism.

One opportunity though  is for a good,  caustic political cartoonist for our national newspaper THE DAILY GRAPHIC…or maybe at one of the independents.

Wonder how she or  he would draw President Obama at Cape Coast?

Wonder how she or he would draw Obama and our Minister of Tourism,  Mme Azuma-Mensah together?

ANY SUGGESTIONS? WHY NOT WRITE SOME IN A COMMENT TO MADinghana.
