DEMOCRACY AND NEIGHBOURLINESS

On July 11, President  Obama said in his heralded speech to the African  continent that democracy is more than just holding elections every four years.

Yes, while democracy  requires laws and constitutional procedures,  democracy  really is  the everyday actions and spirit of the people. When corrosive forms of individualism are allowed to go unchecked by an inept civil service, then democracy is in trouble and civil society starts breaking down. In short, in concrete terms,  healthy  neighbourhoods can be  sacrificed to selfish, greedy agendas.
