“ANYTHING FOR THE GOOD OF ROTARY?”

Around the world,These words herald the opportunity for the approximate 1, 200,000 Rotarians in 32,000 clubs in over 200 countries to share with their colleagues during regular general weekly meetings what’s on their minds.

On Wednesday at our regular weekly meeting, my Kumasi East Rotary President uttered the magic words and as he usually does, skips over me, his club secretary, on his immediate right, and around the table it goes….Well, this time, when it got back to him and he was about to go onto the next item on the agenda, I gently tapped him on the arm, smiled hesitantly and rose to my feet:

“President, fellow Rotarians, and our guests, I’d like to start by complimenting our President on the apple sale fund raising activity held last Saturday. I have been a member of this club for over five years now and this is the first time we have done something as a club involving the students from our two Rotaract clubs – the legs for the ole dogs sitting around this table. And the blood drive the week before too was a great example of local action.

This is the spirit of Rotary using our own talents and energies, not managing other peoples’ money from foreign clubs sent through ROTARY INTERNATIONAL. I really feel that change comes through our own actions, not through efforts planned from outside. I believe this club has lost its focus about what Rotary is all about. These past two weekends showed this Rotarian what Rotary is all about-community action-Kumasi East and its Rotaract Clubs working together to help the community-that’s service above self.”

There was more…but for another post….
