I remember a travel writer contrasting a review written on Trip Advisor with a review that appears in a guide book.

“In all honesty it is sort of the opposite of a guidebook, or complimentary to it, insofar as it really can be very arbitrary with negative reviews based on the smallest thing, whereas guidebooks mostly contain a reasonably objective and consistent overview based on one writer’s inspection of most facilities in any given town.”

Well another possible contrast is the owners of an establishment can write the reviews on Trip Advisor THEMSELVES! The writer of the review below observes this in a review written about an establishment that ranks #1 of 60 hotels! Na, it can’t be true…..

Well, the place was okay for the price, that’s for sure. But, but…i doubt the comments left on this website are all from real tourists. I have the feeling that they have all been given by the owner herself! so let me tell you…the place is under renovation, so there is absolutely no service at all! the rooms are just okay, lots of stuff are broken (bathroom, …). Don’t expect that much for the price, really. The owners push you to give good ratings on the web, kind of opportunistic behavior, so let me tell you : if you want to pay for the smile of the owner, okay go for it, but if you want to pay for a very clean, new place, go somewhere else! Whenever you need a service there, you pay for it or anyway, they don’t provide the service. Should you need to iron for a shirt, they charge you.. a lot! not that nice! not such a family place described by other tourists (owner!!)…AVOID

Now contrast the above with the four previous reviews this hotel received….

1. Wonderful place to stay!!!-and a quote from the review, “I’m looking forward to going back for a longer stay there.”
Na, it can’t be true…

2. Very well kept-can’t beat the service-and a quote from the review, “Everything works and the owners are wonderful people”
Na, it can’t be true…

3. Small Paradise in busy _ _ _ _ _!!!-and here’s the whole review,

“I enjoyed my stay at this perfect place – everything within close distance ( _ _ _) – very friendly and caring owners – a perfect retreat from busy _ _ _ _ _for both travellers and business people
I can only recommend this appartment !!!”

Na, it can’t be true

4. Home away from home ,- and here’s the whole review,

“We stayed at ________ for seven days and the services were excellent. The apartments are beautifull and homely with a touch of both the african and European culture. There was virtually nothing to complain about. Some attributes of this cute Inn are the cleanliness and the ever ready attitude of the staff to assist and make one comfortable.
We really enjoyed our stay and will love to go back whenever possible, thanks to owners —–, —— & ——.
If you are looking for a comfortable place in _ _ _ _ _, ____________is the right place..

Na, it can’t be true

You draw your own, it can’t be true…

And oh by the way, in case you were wondering, the 27 Four Villages Inn reviews were written by our past guests.

In each of our four rooms at Four Villages, we have a notice that gives directions on how to access our free wireless internet service and asks visitors to write us up on Trip Advisor and the Bradt update.

But we don’t “push” that’s for sure.
