The latest BBC FOCUS ON AFRICA (January to March, 2011) is hot off the presses. Highlighted is a wonderful centrefold poster of 50 AFRICAN ICONS to mark around 50 years of African independence. The 50 were selected by tallying up the readership’s votes. “It seems like one person’s icon is another person’s fool or rogue (or worse)…”

The debate is not over. You can join the dialogue.

How about THIS letter that tops ten letters included in the present issue:

“Laurent Gbabo is an African icon because he instituted a multi-party system in Ivory Coast. He gives freedom to all Ivorians participating in the ongoing elections to be controlled by the independent election commission. Ah, Mr Gbabo, you are an African icon!
Jerry Tarwo, Abidjan, Ivory Coast”

Now buy the issue to see if Mr Gbabo is one of the 50….
