GHANA TOURIST BOARD AWARDS: LONG OVERDUE

Recently, looking out on our FOUR VILLAGES INN vehicle, a guest remarked.  “What happened after 2007?”

To which I replied, “The last awards ceremony here in the Forest Zone was held in 2008!”

Now there is more than a touch of irony in all this…In January, 2008,  just before the 8th biennial awards, the Ghana Tourist Board announced  they were going to group regions and have four awards ceremonies  (Accra, coastal, forest and savannah zones) instead of separate ceremonies for each of the ten regions -THIS DESPITE THE FACT THAT THERE MORE AND MORE HOSPITALITY ESTABLISHMENTS, PARTICULARLY HOTELS IN EACH REGION…And still, as I write, the biennial event is long overdue and it’s mainly because today  it so hard to find funding for awards dinners, whether it is four ceremonies or ten.

SUGGESTION: AWARD CEREMONIES DON’T HAVE TO BE LAVISH, EXPENSIVE AFFAIRS! The awards dinner is not what is important, at least it shouldn’t be. It’s the AWARDS and how they reward excellence and provide incentive to all to improve on standards and service delivery. More particularly, it’s great for the hotels, guest houses, restaurants, chop bars, travel and tour companies and  car hires who win.  They can use the award to promote their businesses.

IN OTHER WORDS, GHANA TOURIST BOARD, THE MORE CEREMONIES THE BETTER, FOR THE WINNERS AND THE INDUSTRY! LET’S GET BACK TO AWARDS FOR EACH REGION AS IT WAS FOR THE FIRST 7 AWARDS CEREMONIES.
