GHANA TOURISM: DO WE EVER NEED A BORAT!

Another post where three things come together!

First, this item appeared on the Tourism in Ghana site. Needless to say the snow and mountain tourism bit isn’t so pertinent here, but this statement is, “

“New communication technologies, particularly the Internet, have been game-changers for the tourism sector,” said UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai.

That’s for sure…and here’s one example of innovative technology, travel blogs. And here’s a terrific example of one from a country that Ghana has sought to emulate. EGYPT. Not too long ago, Ghana sent tourism representatives to Egypt to learn all about their “tourism police”, something that is on the books here in Ghana…. Ghana’s tourism agency even changed its name from the Ghana Tourist Board to the Ghana Tourism Authority to march in step with Egypt’s Tourism Authority.

Now Ghana has to adopt innovations like Egypt such as scrapping short-term tourist visas and sponsoring travel bloggers to Ghana. Can you imagine how many people the uncornered market gals reach!

But here’s the catch…nothing comes free although here in Ghana we always want everything for nothing. The girls from uncornered market were sponsored by the Egyptian Tourism Ministry:

“Disclosure: Our trip to Egypt and the UNWTO conference is being provided by Egyptian Tourism Authority. As always, the opinions expressed here are entirely our own.”

Now, do ya think our Ghana Tourism Authority has budgets to sponsor a blogger or two to celebrate Ghana over the internet. Don’t hold your breath…their budgets seem to go entirely for monitoring and licensing….not promotion.

So maybe we should wait for a windfall like Borat. LUCKY KAZAKHSTAN!
